In 2008, the United States House of Representatives designated the third week in October as National Estate Planning Awareness Week. The goal was to help the public understand what estate planning is and why it is such a vital component of financial wellness. This year, Estate Planning awareness week falls from October 18-24. How are you planning to celebrate?
According to the National Association of Estate Planning Councils, it’s estimated that over half of Americans don’t have an up-to-date estate plan1. In our last two blog posts, we’ve considered why it’s important for financial professionals to address estate planning and what can go wrong without it. Still, many financial professionals fail to address estate planning with their clients. This can be an opportunity for those who do.
Estate planning awareness week purpose
Estate Planning Awareness Week provides you with the perfect time to raise the issue of estate planning with clients and prospects. Estate planning councils throughout the country will be organizing Estate Planning Days to promote the importance of estate planning for people of all economic backgrounds. Many will offer membership and sponsorship opportunities. If you’re not currently a member of your local estate planning council, this can be your chance to check it out and get involved.
Estate planning councils
Estate Planning Councils are typically made up of many different professions, including attorneys, accountants, financial planners, insurance agents, and investment professionals. They stress the importance of collaborative planning and can provide educational and networking opportunities that can help you engage your clients. A quick internet search should help you find your local council.
Trust and estate planning attorney
Do you have an attorney or firm to whom you regularly refer clients? If so, Estate Planning Week is the perfect time to remind your clients of that arrangement. Consider collaborating on an email campaign with a link to their website. This can not only help you get clients moving on their estate planning goals, but it can help you build your relationship and get some reciprocal referral opportunities.
Next steps and estate planning resources
Remember, estate and legacy planning are a great way to enhance your value proposition and develop deeper relationships with your clients. Promoting Estate Planning Week reminds your clients that estate planning is critical to their overall financial plan. So get out there and be a part of it!!!
