2021 outlook: What to watch for
February 25, 2021
As 2021 began, many people were eager to put the previous year in the rearview mirror and look ahead with hope for better times. The change in the calendar year brought the resolution of some political uncertainty—Democrats gained control of the Senate and President Biden took office on January 20. But many of last year’s question marks remain.
In February, Nationwide Financial hosted a webcast for advisors to an overview of key factors on the economic, financial market and government fronts for advisors and investors to keep an eye on in the coming year. Ben Brewster from Nationwide Government Relations, Ben Ayers from Nationwide Economics and myself shared perspectives from our specific areas of expertise to help clients focus as volatility and uncertainty persist.
Our 2021 outlook includes:
- A return to strong economic growth this year fueled by government stimulus, monetary policy accommodation and an improving picture for the pandemic
- Tailwinds from these factors plus robust corporate earnings to power a continuing rise in the stock market
- Ongoing gridlock in Congress but three opportunities for Democrats to push specific items on their policy agenda.
