Fed rate hikes: Cause for pause?
Fed watchers see potential for a pause in rate increases, but recent reports show the economy still runs hot.
Determined to tame inflation, the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates four times this year, with more expected at its remaining meetings in September, November, and December. If inflation is more persistent than expected, the cost of bringing it back on target may lead to a recession. The chances for the so-called soft landing – bringing down inflation without crashing the economy – remain to be seen. While market uncertainty may have already peaked this year, it remains high.
